A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Haryana’s Jhajjar district on Wednesday morning, sending strong tremors across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and parts of Western Uttar Pradesh. The earthquake, which occurred at 9:04 AM IST, caused temporary panic in residential areas, office complexes, and high-rise buildings throughout the National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre of the quake was located in Jhajjar, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Although no casualties or damage to infrastructure have been reported so far, the tremors were widely felt and prompted people to evacuate buildings as a precautionary measure.

Tremors Felt in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Beyond

The impact of the earthquake was especially felt in Delhi, where many residents were jolted out of their routine by shaking fans, swinging lights, and swaying household items. Several office workers in Noida and Gurugram reported tremors shaking their computer systems and office chairs, causing momentary disruptions in work.

In Haryana, cities including Rohtak, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram, and Dadri reported noticeable tremors. The earthquake’s effect extended further into Western Uttar Pradesh, with residents in Meerut and Shamli, located nearly 200 km from the epicentre, also reporting tremors.

Eyewitness accounts on social media described the shaking as “unexpected” and “longer than usual,” though officials confirmed the seismic activity lasted under 30 seconds.

Public Reaction and Social Media Buzz

Following the tremors, a flurry of posts appeared across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook, with users from Delhi, Noida, Meerut, and Gurugram sharing their experiences. Many users reported feeling the shaking while working from home or commuting to work, with hashtags like #EarthquakeDelhi, #DelhiTremors, and #NCRQuake trending briefly.

Videos showing ceiling fans oscillating, office workers rushing out, and even CCTV footage capturing movement inside elevators and corridors went viral within minutes of the quake.

NDRF Issues Advisory: Stay Calm, Stay Safe

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) quickly issued a safety advisory urging people not to panic, and advising those inside buildings to take stairs instead of elevators while exiting.

The advisory also offered safety tips for drivers, suggesting that individuals pull over to open areas and remain in their vehicles until the shaking subsides.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) also issued an educational bulletin reminding residents about Delhi’s seismic vulnerability and the importance of being prepared for earthquakes, no matter how mild.

Why Is Delhi So Vulnerable to Earthquakes?

Delhi’s location in Seismic Zone IV — one of the most vulnerable zones to earthquakes in India — means that it is geographically prone to frequent seismic disturbances.

Experts from the DDMA explain that Northern India, especially the Himalayan belt, lies near the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. These plates press against each other over time, accumulating stress, which is suddenly released in the form of earthquakes when the plates slip.

The national capital region lies close to several active fault lines, including:

  • Delhi-Haridwar Ridge

  • Sohna Fault

  • Delhi-Moradabad Fault

  • Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault

These fault lines significantly increase the seismic risk for Delhi and its neighbouring areas.

Historical Earthquakes in Delhi-NCR

Delhi has witnessed multiple significant earthquakes over the centuries. According to seismic records:

  • Since 1720, the region has experienced at least five earthquakes with a magnitude exceeding 5.5.

  • Some of the most impactful tremors have led to considerable panic, property damage, and even structural concerns in older buildings.

While Wednesday’s quake was moderate in intensity, seismologists warn that Delhi’s infrastructure, especially in densely populated areas, may not be fully earthquake-resistant — a concern that grows with each tremor.

Preparedness Measures for Earthquakes

Seismologists and disaster management authorities emphasize the need for public awareness, structural preparedness, and timely evacuation drills. According to the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), these basic precautions can greatly reduce injury and property damage during a quake:

If You Are Indoors:

  • Stay calm and do not run.

  • Take cover under a sturdy table or desk.

  • Stay away from glass, windows, mirrors, and tall furniture.

  • Do not use elevators during an earthquake.

If You Are Outdoors:

  • Move to an open area, away from buildings, trees, and power lines.

  • If driving, pull over and stay inside the vehicle until the tremor stops.

After the Tremor:

  • Check for gas leaks, electrical damage, or structural cracks.

  • Avoid using mobile networks unless necessary to keep lines open for emergency responders.

While there are no reports of injury or structural damage at this time, experts are calling this tremor a wake-up call for both citizens and urban planners. With rapid urbanization and high-rise construction in Delhi-NCR, the importance of earthquake-resistant infrastructure and emergency response protocols has never been greater.

Authorities are continuing to monitor aftershocks and are advising residents to remain alert but not alarmed.
